If anyone is familiar with both towns, should we stay in Varenna or Baveno for our 3 days to veg out in the lakes region? Our criteria are which is the most beautiful area and also convenient for lake ferries? We are driving from Nice and are on a conservative budget.

Prudence, I can't comment on Baveno, since I stay in Stresa on Lago Maggiore. They're probably both very similar though, although I suspect Stresa may have more Ferry options. Choosing between Varenna and a location on Lago Maggiore is difficult. The decision will probably depend on your interests and what type of sights you want to see in each location, and also where you're heading after the lakes region? For driving in Italy, I assume you're aware of the need for the compulsory International Driver's Permit and also of the ZTL areas that exist in many towns in Italy (large fines result from driving through them).

We stayed in Lugano, Switzerland and went by train to Lake Maggiorre and Lake Como, for day trips.
