Lake Como

We will be travelling from Milane Centrale to Varenna by train this week - May 8- for a day trip. We arrive around 11:30 am.

The goal is to take the ferry over to Bellagio. How much time should we allow our selves in Bellagio?

Is it worth doing the triangle ferry and town route of Menaggio, Bellagio and Varenna?

We would like to catch the 7 pm train back from Varenna to Milan

The ferry crossings last just minutes. You can allocate the time as you wish. You can see Bellagio, Menaggio, and Varenna in less than one hour each if you want. It’s really up to you how long you intend to spend in each place. Most of the time will be spent enjoying the views and eating at sidewalk restaurants (and you can do both activities at once). Shopping for souvenirs is another activity.

When you arrive in Varenna, check when the ticket office closes. You may want to buy your return ticket upon arrival to avoid any issues trying to catch the 7 PM train. I would take the first ferry to Bellagio when you arrive and have lunch and wander around a few hours. Then ferry back to Varenna and spend the rest of your time exploring. Be sure to have a drink at one of the places on the lake.
