There's a guy named Rick Steves who has written a series of great guidebooks with exactly that kind of information. :-) But srsly, you need to specify which town on the lake and what your price range is to get helpful recommendations. Good luck.

Eric, I recommend staying in Varenna; it was my personal favorite in the mid-lake area. We stayed at Albergo Milano & it was a highlight of our visit there. We splurged for a room overlooking the lake with a balcony & we loved the hotel & the view! I like Varenna because it's a small, colorful town with a nice lakefront promenade.
