Lake Como; where to stay?

We are traveling to Rome from Colmar, France with a two night stop at Lake Como. Albergo Milano in Varenna is sold out for the time of our visit. Since we will only have about a day and a half, we'd like to see what we can. We don't want to be in a noisy area but we don't want to have to take a taxi up the hill to our hotel either. Should we stay in Como and visit Varenna and Bellagio by ferry? Any hotel recommendations in Varenna or Como? We certainly don't mind this being a relaxing trip (our vacation from our vacation). Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

We are staying at Hotel Olivedo in Varenna for the first time, in May, on our 2nd trip to Lake Como (stayed in Bellagio before). This is easily the most convenient lodging for both train and ferry.
Cheers, Tom

Varenna is a great home base to use at Lake Como. It's a beautiful town that never seems to feel crowded or touristy. I stayed at the Hotel Monte Codeno, which is an easy walk from the train station, the town center, and the ferry dock. Nice place, wonderful staff. Don't miss dinner at the restaurant, the food is amazing.

Lois, Other Hotels that you could look at.... > Albergo Olivedo (right by the Ferry dock) - they also have a companion property next door called La Torretta, which is managed by the same people. > Villa Cipressi (in the main part of town by the Church and Piazza) > Royal Hotel Victoria (somewhat "upscale" and very comfortable - also right in the main Piazza) Happy travels!

I'd recommend staying in Varenna or Bellagio. Varenna is convenient with the train station and Bellagio is just a very short ferry ride across the lake

Hi Lois, We have stayed @ Orange House B&B. in Varenna prior to our RS tour. Short walk downhill from train station and close to lakefront, town and ferry dock. Level walkable streets parallel to the lakefront. Nice hosts and breakfast. Would definitely stay there again. Ciao, Sherry

We stayed at the Hotel Florence in Bellagio in September at the end of our 3-week trip to Italy. It was very relaxing and our room overlooked the lake. Bellagio is quiet and quaint with great restaurants and warm hospitality. Of all the places we visited on our trip to Italy, our stay in Bellagio was our favorite.

I have noticed the Paul Wright Bed and Breakfast mentioned online a number of times as being a terrific place to stay. He is also a landscape artist. You can read about them in TripAdvisor.com. He can be reached at Wrightart.com.

We're staying at the Hotel Villa Aurora in Lezzeno. Checkout their website at www.hotelauroralezzeno.com. While we have never stayed here, it does come highly recommended from this site as well as Trip Advisor.

I contacted Albergo Milano personally and they told me that they still had two rooms available for the dates that we will be there. I guess I was going by what the hotel brokers on the internet had available. The restaurant at Albergo Milano is closed on Tuesdays which is the day that we will be arriving. It will also be a holiday (May 1st). For those familiar with Varenna, are we going to have problems finding restaurants that are open on that day? And thank you again to everyone for your help.
