Lake Como

Please give me suggestions about which place to stay in at Lake Como. This will be in July 2023 and we know it will be crowded and hot! We are seniors in our 80s and plan to use public transportation. We'd like to stay several days and boat around to the different towns at LC. Thanks in advance.

Varenna, Bellagio or Menaggio. The lovely triangle in the midlake. Varenna is on the Milan to Tirano railway. The train station is called Varenna-Esino since it serves both towns. To reach Bellagio or Menaggio (in case you prefer those or in case you find better accommodations there) you would take the ferry across the lake from Varenna, a 5-10 min ride. Your choice, but stick to one of those 3 towns. They have the most frequent ferry service.

Roberto is correct. Bellagio is more hilly, if that is a factor. Varenna offers the most transportation opportunities. Menaggio has a wonderful weekend market.

We have stayed in Varenna a few times and found it reasonably priced and very convenient to get around by ferry from there. It's easy to visit Bellagio, Menaggio, and other towns or villas in that area with a mid-lake ferry pass. It's also a nice ferry ride south from there down to Como, or north from there up to Collico at the northern end of the lake. Check out Hotel Olivedo right at the ferry landing in Varenna.

Menaggios's possible advantages for you are that it is flatter, and it has quicker access of a good day trip to Lugano and an excellent day trip to Bellinzona in Switzerland

Menaggio's disadvantage is that it is nowhere near an attractive a village as Bellagio or Varenna.
