Lake Como- 3-6 Days

We will be traveling to Lake Como via Milan in September. Our schedule is flexible and we have anywhere from 3 to 6 days to spend in Lake Como. Our purpose is to explore and enjoy the beauty and food of the Lake Como Region, not to just sit and relax.

How many days are needed to explore and enjoy the area? I feel like three may to little and six too much. Any insight on length of stay and areas in Lake Como to visit is appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your insight.

Where will you go after Como? That may help answer the question.

Hi Patrick. We and most people find 3-4 days a good length there. There are good hikes and day trips, just depends on how much, for instance, you would want to do hiking on multiple days, or get creative with day trips. Have a great trip!

Thank you for your response, we will be headed back to Milan on our way to Lisbon. This will be our third trip to Italy, so have been to most other areas with the exception of Sicily and Lake Como.

I don't know Lake Como ( I also have trip planned there in April). But Sicily was amazing. I went last year for one month and travelled on train and bus. I am in my 60's and loved it all. Crossed the whole island and it was so much fun. Food is great. Architecture and people were amazing.

If you haven’t chosen where to stay on Lake Como, I would highly recommend Varenna. Our My Way tour took us there last fall for two nights, and our well traveled guide believes it’s the most beautiful city on the whole lake. It is very walkable with gorgeous scenery. It was easy to take a ferry to tour the lake and see other towns from the water. Several of our tour mates explored Bellagio, too, and preferred Varenna for a home base, just to share some opinions.

We had only two nights there, and I would’ve been happy to stay one more day just for the calm and beauty of being there.

Four full days on the ground should be about right. That should give enough time to explore other towns on the lake that are accessable by ferry.

We stayed in Bellagio for four nights a few years ago and loved it.

This year we are returning for another four nights, but will stay in Varenna. Personally an extra couple of nights would be even better in my opinion.

There is so much to see and do, you will have no problem filling your time.

Also stayed for 4 nights and went to several towns on the Lake by ferry from Bellagio which is a good location to go across the lake along with Varenna. We had a car so did a half day trip to Lugano Switzerland and a day trip to Milan, both of which we enjoyed. Dinner at the Hotel Serbollini in Bellagio was wonderful. You could stay more nights for sure, maybe 5.
