Lago Trasimeno vs. Cortona

I have a hostel booked for 3 nights (La Casa sul Lago) at Lake Trasimeno but am considering either a day trip to Cortona or staying the night at a convent called Casa Betania in Cortona. My first question is, does anyone know of this accommodation in Cortona? Secondly, do you think I should just stay put instead of checking out of the hostel and into the place in Cortona for just one night? Third, I would like to go to the Arezzo antiques market from either Cortona or Lago Trasimeno. Which is easier on public transport? Thanks very much for your ideas.

Hi Linda,

Will you have a car? Lake Trasimeno is beautiful but large--depending on the location of the convent it might feel a little isolated. The town on the lake that we liked when we were there in October was Castiglione del Lago. However, I also really liked Cortona and would prefer staying there myself.

Not sure about getting to Arezzo...we found having a car in that region was really helpful.

Edit: It looks like the hotel is convenient to public transportation. I'd e-mail the hotel about the ease of getting to Arezzo.

It is much more convenient to reach Arezzo from Cortona than from La Casa sul Lago on Lago Trasimeno. Arezzo has frequent service throughout the day, 10 min bus to station + 20 min on train. There's infrequent service from the Torricella station (200m from La Casa sul Lago), and the only morning train takes almost 2 hours. You can check schedules at www.trenitalia.it. Pick a date within 60 days if you also want to see prices.

Thank you Sharon & Frank. I probably will not drive and so I think it'll be smart to stay in Cortona that 4th night and head to the Arezzo market in the morning. Do either of you have familiarity with the Arezzo antiques market? It was recommended in several guides and in Frances Mayes' books.

Have been to Cortona 2 or 3 times, but never went to the antiques market in Arezzo. Maybe you could do another post titled Arezzo antiques market and get some feedback from those that have.
