Anyone have any information about how busy may 1 is? Our first leg of our trip is for venice arriving april 30 leaving may 3.....
is it a huge holiday all over Italy??

Yes that's Labor Day. It's a major holiday around the world, not just Italy. Services like public transport) are very limited too.
Also 25 April is a national holiday in Italy (Liberation day-25 April 1945 when Nazi Germany surrendered to the Italian partisans in Milan) therefore most Italians will take the whole week off around those holidays. It will be the busiest period of the year (and don't forget that in 2014 Easter is in late April too and the Monday after Easter, April 21 is a holiday).
So I suggest prompt booking of your accommodations in major tourist cities.

There may be a few places closed or limited but for the most part Venice never closes. I've been there on holidays and barely noticed a difference.
