Labor Day in Rome?

My wife and I are planning a trip to Italy (Rome, Tuscany and Venice) at the end of April beginning of May. In my last post people pointed out that Labor day would be happening while were are there. We have some flexibility on when we go so I was thinking we would go from April 28 - May 13. With Labor day happening when we first get there and are in Rome (4 days). My thought being Rome isn't a bad place to be if museums and other sights are closed for the day. The other dates I was looking at were a week earlier with us being in Florence and/or in the Tuscan countryside on Labor Day. My concern with this is will most thing in Florance, San Gim and Siena be closed? Any thought and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Museums will be closed no matter which city you go to.
But all of those locations are really open air museums, so you can see things just walking around in the streets (monuments etc.), but you won't be able to enter inside most (actually probably any) museum.
Many shops will be closed, but restaurants will be available.

a week earlier would be marginally less crowded.

We were in Florence last May 1 and all museums were closed except that the Boboli Gardens were open and free -- great excuse to just wander the city without feeling that we "ought" to be seeing museums. (It helped that this was a repeat visit.) Loved it!!

We will be in Venice May 1 and we're planning to just hang out as it's our last day there. Is rail service reduced to say Ferrara or Verona or vaporetto service for the other islands. Looking at keeping options open for escaping the crowds mid day.
