If I am staying in Vernazza do I take train to La Spezia? Then what? Not sure what city La Spezia is in :) Not sure if I am close enough to then take a taxi to hotel in Vernazza?
Alex,
I'm not entirely sure what you're asking?
La Spezia is a larger city located south of Vernazza, and is considered one of the "gateway" cities to the Cinque Terre (the other is Genova).
If you're staying in Vernazza, you'll need to travel to either gateway city for trains to other parts of Italy when you leave. If you're staying in Vernazza, you can pretty much walk wherever you need to go within that community.
If you're arriving in the C.T. via La Spezia, you'll change trains there and board the local C.T. train which will take you to Vernazza.
If you have a copy of the Italy Guidebook, you might want to have a look at the Maps.
Cheers!
You'll probably find it helpful to look at the area using the online maps at googlemap.com or viamichelin.com
It also depends on where you are coming from. I will be traveling from Paris. So I am taking a night train from Paris to Milan and then a local train from Milan to Monterosso. From there the small Cinque Terre train. The Rick Steves Italy book has an entire section on this area. There is also a really nice "snapshot" book on Italy's Cinque Terre by Rick Steves that is small and full of some great information about the 5 towns. I am really glad I purchased it as it gave me all the information that I could ever need regarding having a successful trip to the area.
Thanks Ken ~yes traveling from Pisa to CT but on schedule could not get to Vernazza directly so thanks for your answer. Now I know to take train to La Spezia and then local train to Vernazza!
