It looks like the shortest (in distance) route from La Spezia to Venice by train would involve changing trains in Parma, Modena, and Vicenza. Is that workable? How long would it take? Is there a better alternative?
Hi Mike. Not quite. There are various routes. One is via Milan, but that takes about 6 hours. The other routes are via Bologna or Florence (Firenze), which take 4 to 5 hours, most involve two changes. Use trenitalia.com to easily see all the choices. For the stations, use La Spezia Centrale and Venezia S Lucia. Enjoy your trip!
Mike, one of the train routings to Venice from La Spezia Centrale does require train changes at Parma and Bologna. No Vicenza. A different routing is via Pisa and Firenze. A third routing is via Milano Centrale. The fastest runs from La Spezia Centrale are via Pisa and Firenze. Here's a link to a picture of the early runs out of La Spezia Centrale. You can see the three types of runs on the link below and on www.trenitalia.com. The fastest run of the day takes 4hrs14min. It's the 10:06 departure and it goes via Pisa and Firenze.
If you don't want to change trains a lot, take the IC train up the coast to genoa and on to Milano Centrale. Change there for the Frecce train to Venice. Buy your tickets online about 3 months ahead to get the super economy fares ( as low as 9 euros).
Thank you, all three!
