We are doing a Mediterranean cruise beginning May 12. We stop in La Spezia , Italy and don’t know what to do with our day when we arrive to that port. Does anyone have advice for La Spezia as to what to see? We love to walk and learn history and culture. In the guide book for cruises I do t see much about this place ( i know they can’t write about everything!!)
Thanks!
Having visited the Cinque Terre many times, we spent a day in La Spezia during one trip and very much enjoyed the waterfront promenade and the excellent Naval Museum. This article from the Crazy Tourist lists some of the sights. I think Porto Venere is also worth a half day or so, and it is mentioned in the article. FWIW, I would not go to the Cinque Terre with the hordes from the cruise ship. Mob scene,

Have to agree with Laurel, don't try to do the Cinque Terre. Instead head to Lerici and Tellaro.
About a 20 minute taxi ride, at most €40. Bus is also available, but I'm not familiar with where to catch it.
Both of these cute little beach towns are beautiful and inviting. There's even a boat ride that connects Lerici to Tellaro. Along with ferry service from La Spezia.
I think the towns of Lerici and Montemarcello may sponsor free excursions from the cruise terminal. If so, they would be worth doing - especially for Lerici.
