After leaving 5 terra we plan to rent a car in LaSpeiza and return it in Orvieto before taking the train to Rome. Any suggestions on rentals. Would it be better to rent and return in other towns nearby. Consider we will be on foot or taxi so am looking for places near the rail line.

auto europe or kemwell for car rental, just make your drop off point is open when you wish to drop. they close around lunch time and early sundays if at all open

In La Spezia, Avis is well located about a 10 minute walk from the station near the central open market. Check the hours, they may be closed on weekends. I've used Avis a lot, it's more expensive often, but they are professional and they get fewer complaints on these forums. NA HS '67

Hertz has a location in Orvieto across the street from the train station. We went through AutoEurope.com and obtained a Hertz car for less than directly from Hertz.
You can compare rates online easily.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I found AVIS to be the best choice (based on location and hours). Will let you know how this pans out. The viaMichelin site was very helpful too if you;re looking for travel information and driving directions.
