Has anyone been to La Reggia di Caserta? How is it? Any good tips for visiting there? I am surprised it is not listed in the Rick Steves guidebook.
Caserta is definitely one of the hidden gems. It's a short 45 minute train ride from Naples, the train station is across the street. There are never huge crowds like Versailles. The fountains always run, and you have not only the Palace but two fantastic gardens. The Formal and the English.
I've been here 5 times in the past 14 years and always discover something new. My daughter lives 20 minutes away.
Tips: visit the Palace either first or around three.
Walk from the Palace, about 2 miles, you'll want to enjoy the fountains along the way. There are also bikes or e-bikes for rent.
Last fall, the "path" to the Aquaduct was open. We did not do the full climb.
The English Garden has temples, grottos, and is all in a natural yet park like setting.
There's really not a way to see it all in one trip. There is a map for the English garden.
To return to the palace take the tram, 1,50 E.
Sitting above Caserta is the old town of Casertavecchia. Wonderful views from here but a car is needed.
I prefer this to Versailles.
Hope you have the opportunity to visit.
Thank you for the great information 😀
