After a week in the Cortona area, We have five days to spend in the Marche, perhaps in two different places before returning to spend the night at the Rome airport. I would appreciate suggestions. Thank you
Just did a bike tour in Le Marche last September. We started in Tuscany and crossed over to Le Marche. highlights...Gubbio and Urbino, if you have a car, San Leo is a great/tiny hilltop town with a huge fortress at the very top of the hill. Also, SanSelpocro walled old town is a wonderful place for a overnight stay. Very quiet, an a unique experience to be in the walled old town. Easy to walk from one gate to the other to other with fun shops to visit. I'm trying to add the link to my shutterfly photo album for your viewing pleasure http://lemarchebiketoursept2012.shutterfly.com/
We liked Senigallia. Pretty little town with a gorgeous sandy beach and lots of great restaurants, including two Michelin-starred places.
Neither Gubbio nor Sansepolcro are in Le Marche. Urbino is and it's probably the no. 1 must see, in my opinion. The only big city is Ancona. It's probably the most visited place. I served there for a few months in my youth, but I got bored with it. In addition, to the ancient town of Urbino, the following towns are also gems: Osimo, Loreto, Recanati, Offagna, San Ginesio, Offida, Moresco, Corinaldo, Gradara, Ascoli. For nature: Parco del Conero and Conero Riviera (a must), Grottoes of Frasassi (a must), Monti Sibillini (Castelluccio, Ussita, Frontignano, Castelsantangelo sul Nera), la Gola dell'Infernaccio. The best sea and coast villages are Portonovo, Sirolo, Numana ( all in the Conero riviera). Senigallia is nice too, if you like a bigger sea resort town. But I would do the Conero riviera first.
Has anyone had experience with hotels or agriturismos or B&Bs in the Camerano, Sirolo, Numara area? If so please recommend. Ellen
