Hello, Has anyone traveled to La Maddalena Island off Sardinia? We're thinking about renting a place for 4 days. I'm wondering about the town: restaurants, grocery stores. This will be a relaxing beach trip with a rented place that has a kitchen, but I don't want to cook dinner every night. Grazie!
Yes. I've been there a few times although I always stayed on the main island side. It's not a tiny village, so there is everything you need in La Maddalena. The place has numerous ferries to Palau, which has also plenty of restaurants, bars and stores.
At the time there was still a NATO Naval base where the US Nuclear Submarines of the Mediterranean Fleet were stationed, the largest such base in the Med. I think it was closed 6 or 7 years ago, otherwise you'd have encountered many US Navy personnel (the only few Americans you would see in Sardinia, since it's not a place most American tourists visit). Not sure what the base is used for now, probably nothing due to the nuclear waste still hanging there. The archipelago is a Natural Marine Sanctuary now, and it's very beautiful. I recommend taking boat excursions with the many operators there.
Thanks Roberto.
