La Giudecca area of Venice

Does anyone know of the Givdecca area? My friend did not realize this was not on the Venice Island and is considering changing her apt. Did she make a mistake picking this area?I would appreciate your opinion.

Thought there was a bridge? That's where Google maps satellite view comes in handy. It's a very empowering tool because it lets you figure these things out on your own. It's absolutely indispensable these days for travel to new places.

She is fine there. Vaporetti (boats that are like commuter buses) take you everywhere. Giudecca is likely cheaper and less touristy than the
St Mark's area. We stayed in Venice a few yrs ago in Dorsoduro, which is across canal from the tourist sights. Enjoy the relative peace, take frequent vapo rides, visit the outer islands (especially Lido) and savor Venezia at night, after the tourbus crowds have left- itis very cool.

The only downside to staying in the Giudecca is that she will need to be sure to keep an eye on the vaporetto schedule to get back to that island before they stop running. Because the vaporetto fare is 6.50 euros each trip, she should definitely buy a vaporetto pass that will be good for the entire time she's there. (They come in multi-day units.) They pay for themselves if you ride the vaporetto at least twice a day. I'm guessing this is her first time to Venice. Because of that, I would think she might enjoy staying on the main island itself. Pensione Guerrato is a Rick Steves favorite and very popular on this board. We've stayed there twice and can't recommend it highly enough. The rooms start at 95E a night for a double with a shared bath (140E private bath). If you're considering the shared bath, I believe those bedrooms have their own sink in the room. At least ours did back in 2003 when we stayed there the first time. Breakfast included. Outstanding location and very helpful and friendly staff. http://www.pensioneguerrato.it/

I think she was under the impression that there was a bridge that linked Giudecca with the main Venice. Thanks for all your advice.

Unfortunately, there is not a bridge from Guidecca to the main part of Venice.

I've been to Venice many times and stayed on Giudecca Island once at the Hilton Molino Stuckey via Priceline. It's an OK place to stay, likely cheaper and less tourists. It's also more difficult to get to and from when you want to see the main sights of Venice. Personally I don't think it was worth the cost savings to stay on Giudecca. Yes, the vaporettos visit on a regular schedule...but who wants to wait on a boat every time you come and go? Also, vaporettos are not cheap. If you want a less touristy and less expensive place to stay on Venice Island then head for St Elena down at the tip of the island. Wonderful place with grassy parks and tall trees, kids playing soccer, families out communing with neighbors and English is not so widely spoken. It's just what I was looking for.

My wife and I have also stayed at the Hilton Molino Stukey. I'm hoping that your hotel is not off at the Sant'Eufemia vaporetto stop. We got off there thinking this was the closest stop to the Hotel. It wasn't and we walked through several small neighborhoods to get to the Hilton. Those neighborhoods did not look that great to us. Nothng scenic there. Palenca is a much better stop.
