Thank you, Laurel. I went to L'Aquila two years ago, not realizing how little progress had been made. I was shocked at the reality of the event. It was, however, one of the most profound experiences of my life. I'll be back this year, but not as a tourist.

I received this blog last week also. I was shocked to read about the slow progress. I also did not realize how severe the destruction and loss was for this community, which is really not that far from Rome. It made me feel very selfish that when I travel in Italy I am more interested in seeing the colosseum than visiting and helping a community just down the road. Ugh. Thanks for sharing this article. It would be great if visitors took time to visit this area and support the efforts with tourism.
