Has anyone traveled to L'Aquila since the earthquake in April of 2009. Just how bad is it? Is the historic center opened or closed? I am planning a trip to visit my family in May of 2011. Any comments would help. Thank you.
Since things tend to happen rather slowly in Italy, I'm sure that they are still rebuilding L'Aquila, and will be for some time. It might be interesting to see how they rebuild after an earthquake. If you are unsure about how much the town has recovered, you might want to stay in a nearby town and visit L'Aquila as a day trip.
If your family is in L'Aquila, can't you just ask them? Good luck.
Reconstruction varies. All highways ans railways are open, of course, as are almost all roads in town. Some buildings have been reconstructed, others are facing a lengthy process of restoring. The center is not closed, some buildings are. There are not rubbish piles there.
Thank for all your responses.
