Kids and Rome in November 2011 and City Pass?

Hi I will be taking my kids to Rome in early November and was looking for advise on what kinds of things would be fun for them. * Should we prebuy tickets to the Colosseum and Vatican museum? (where do I buy them?) * What other sites will be good for the kids?
* What else should I be aware of?

Yes, you should book tickets to both sites before you go. http://biglietteriamusei.vatican.va/musei/tickets/do?weblang=en&do and http://www.pierreci.it/en/museums-and-monuments.aspx?title=colosseo&collocazione=&tipoMuseo=#results Both are the official websites for their respective sites. You can book entry tickets or tours through both sites. They will both also allow you to bypass the lines. You don't say how old your kids are or what they like so it's very hard to make suggestions on what might be fun for them. Also, not sure what city pass you refer to or what you mean by: What else should I be aware of? More information would be helpful. Donna

Thanks for the websites. We will get tickets tonight. The kids are 7 and 9 and I have dragged them Across the world so they are becoming good travelers. We have never been to europe so I thought Rome would be a good centering point for a trip. We will also spend a few days in Paris.

Durrell, You might want to check out: http://www.romapass.it/english/index.html It's a discount pass that you and your kids can use to save money while in Rome. You can find out more info from the site but basically it gives you free entry to the first two sites covered by the pass and discounts to the rest. It does not cover the vatican museums. You should make a list of sites you wish to see and do the math to see if the pass will save you money. You get to bypass the lines with this pass so if you are just looking for entry to the colosseum this will work for you. Find the complete list of sites covered by the pass on it's website. Donna

Thanks for the link, I will take a look. One other thing, my wife read the Rick Steves' guide to Rome and is worried about crime and over all safety. Should we be concerned? Also the guide book makes it seem like kids may not like Rome that much. Have any of you been to Rome with kids (7 and 9)? And what was your experience?

What else should I be aware of? Rain. You could have a day or so when it rains all day. http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/vacationplanner/vacationclimatology/monthly/ITXX0067 http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/vacationplanner/compare/results?from=vac_compare&clocid1=ITXX0067&clocid2=USWA0396 For adults, that's a museum day with a long lunch. For kids bored with museums, maybe a train trip to Orvieto would be an adventure. There is a view from a castle, a pretty cool funicular up to the city, and then the obligatory pizza and gelato. The day would be taken care of, and maybe when you get back to Rome the weather will be ok.

Hi Durrell, We'll be taking our kids to Rome this summer too (same ages - 7 and 9) and I'll be blogging about it when we're there. If we do anything interesting I'll definitely be writing about it so if you're interested you can check it out. My site is - www.yourfamilyineurope.com and we'll be arriving in Rome Aug. 7th. They are mostly interested in seeing how many different flavors of gelato they can eat and they want to throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain. (Watched The Lizzie McGuire movie about 15 times....) Easy to please! :)
