Kids allowed in Bars in Venice/Rome?

Are children allowed in bars? In the evenings my husband and I would like to sit down and enjoy wine and try various foods through "Pub-Craw Dinner (in Rick's book)" in Venice. But we have a 9 yrs. old with us.
Would restaurants be the only place we could have drinks?

it depends on what you mean by 'bar'. In Italy bars are usually more like cafes. I'm pretty sure it would be ok to bring a 9 yr old in.

Yes. "Bars" aren't bars in the U.S. sense, although some can be seedy. We took our 4-year-old everywhere.

You will not find bars as we have in America. They are sidewalk cafes. You can probably find bars in upscale hotels in Italy but you'll be doing your drinking in restaurants/sidewalk cafes.

My Italian instructor says that it's pretty unusual for Italians to drink socially without it being part of a meal, hence the small number of what Americans think of as bars.
