Keyhole in Rom

Any input on viewing the Keyhole in Rome with the view of St. Peters? We will be near the coliseum with only 3 days and are trying to determine if we should add this to the agenda. We also want to spend time in Trastevere so am concerned about stretching too thin. Thanks for your feedback!

I've done it but wouldn't make a special trip just for that. The much better reason to head up the Aventine is for Santa Sabina; the gate of Villa del Priorato di Malta with the keyhole is just up the street so it wasn't out of the way when we visited that very old church.

It is cool, it a bit out of the way and there are often lines since tour groups drop by and line up.

OTOH, it is just across the river from Trastevere. Perhaps an early evening walk, after the heat has passed and tour groups less likely to be there? Take the tram to Ostiense, walk up (15 to 20 minutes) visit not only the keyhole but Santa Sabina ( check hours) and the Giardino degli Aranci for additional views, then come back down to Testaccio and go to one of my favorite Roman pizzerias, Da Remo in Piazza di Santa Maria Liberatrice. If you get to Da Remo about 8 pm, you should get right in, but if there is a wait, it is worth it and service is so fast you’ll only be there about 40 minutes. Then take the tram back to the Colosseo area. The tram for Ostiense stope right by the Colosseo.

One of my favorite morning walks on our last trip to Rome was to the Giardini degli aranci, which is just a skip to the keyhole. I agree it's not worth it if it's the only thing you're seeing but catching some of the quieter sites nearby can make for a pleasant side track near Trastevere.
