Does anyone know of a good place to rent a kayak in Venice, Italy. Ideally it could be one where they just give the kayak and let you go, not like a tour or a set route or something.
Hi,
From what I’ve read you can’t kayak in Venice without a guide, but seems like you can free wheel the guided tour! The guide is to keep you safe on the canals and rii,but might give you some free reins as where you want to go.
I did an event called Row Venice, where my husband and I learned to row a traditional gondola on the canals of Venice. While we were rowing on some of the smaller canals, we occasionally would come upon a kayak. The problem is that the kayakers aren’t familiar with the traditional vocal signals that the boatmen call out before they turn corners on the canals, and, because of this, a lot of times gondolas would run into or nearly collide with kayaks when going around corners. I would never consider kayaking in Venice for this reason. Our instructor told us this was a big problem for the gondoliers and the boaters.
We also did Row Venice [pre-covid] and had a great adventure. The price at the time was about 85 Euros for up to four people, and it was 90 minutes.
Have a great time!
