Just returned from 13 days in the North - part 2 - Verona

I took an early train from Milan to Verona and left my luggage at the train station (easy, 10 euro for 2 pieces), as I was continuing to Venice that evening.

Verona was charming. I bought a Verona Card (8 euro) which includes buses and the major sites. Juliet's House (Casa di Giulietta): saw the inside of one of these old, old homes, very interesting. Then lousy pizza, good house wine & great gelato (try as a might - and try I did - I never found gelato that was anything less than excellent) in the square, among the stalls of souvenirs vying for attention between the fast food vendors and the fresh produce. Then up the tower (I paid another 2 euro for the elevator) for beautiful views. I loved walking the streets and looking at the buildings. I also visited the Church of S. Anastasia and the Duomo, both worth the time.

Regrets: I went to the Teatro Romano (ancient Roman theatre w/museum). I am obviously spoiled, we have several here at home that are larger and/or more interesting. OTOH, I missed seeing the Arena (also Roman), which closed early that day to prepare for a rock (?) concert. Next time. . .

Almost forgot - seeing the Alps from the train, lovely !!!

I almost didn't visit the Ampitheater because we were planning to visit the Colloseum in Rome. I'm glad we did. The building is in working order and, as you mention, still in use today. The Colloseum is a complete ruin and disappointing after visiting Verona's ampitheater.

Seeing an opera there is now on my list but a rock concert might be fun too.
