Hello, travellers. A quick question please. We are arriving in Rome from Lyon at 5.50pm at night in July. We are there for just one night before heading to Orvieto the following afternoon. We have been to Rome previously and seen all of the main sites. Our thinking at present is to find a nice area where we can train easily to from the Fiumicino Airport on a regional train - maybe Trastevere for a nice meal and a look around the following morning? We are departing from the Tiburtina station the following day for Orvieto at noon. Area, restaurant and accommodation recommendations would be appreciated. We have another night and full day in Rome on our way back the following week, so a second area is also on the cards. Thank you in anticipation. Regards, Megan
Would you consider just going to Orvieto from FCO?
Do you have enough time already in Orvieto?
This question comes at the perfect time for me. I'll be landing in Rome in March around 6:30pm and heading to Umbria. I was thinking I'd have to go to Roma Termini though rather than Tiburtina, so I just started looking at hotels in that area. My thought is I'll wake up in the morning, have a shower and breakfast and maybe wander around the city a bit before getting on a train to start my trip. Is there an advantage to Tiburina rather than Termini?
Trastevere is about as far as you can get from Tiburtina station. One is west of the main center of Rome, the other is way east. Have you worked out how to get to the train station the next morning?
To answer some of your questions …
We had originally planned to go direct to Orvieto but the late timing of trains etc wasn’t going to work for us at the other end picking up a rental etc in Orvieto late at night.
We have chosen Tiburtina only because that is where the train to/from Orvieto for the times we chose goes into and from …
I wonder if we are best just to go from the airport to Tiburtina and find some accommodation there in that area? Everything looks close on a map - thanks for the heads up that Trastevere is not that close to Tiburtina!
There are commuter trains that run from Tiburtina to Trastevere and back every 10-15 minutes all day long, costing 1 Euro and taking about 20 minutes' travel time. If Trastevere is where you want to spend your evening, getting to Tiburtina shouldn't be a limitation. Unless it is a Sunday or holiday...I had a little trouble last week with more limited schedules over the Labor Day weekend.
Edit: the Trastevere train station is a good size, with lots of connections, but it is not right in the heart of Trastevere. It's easy to walk there from the center but not if you have lots of luggage. Maybe check a map before booking a hotel.
