Hello Ill be traveling to Rome, and i wanted to know if there any towns closer to Rome, just like Cinque Terre Vernanzza.. I would go there and visit, but Due to budget contraint and time.I might have to stay closer to Rome.
I'm going to send you to a place that not even Rick Steves knows about it. It's not too far from Rome. It's a group of islands called the Pontine Islands (aka Ponziane islands). Do a google Image search to see some pictures and see if you like them, and if you do, I'll tell you I to get there. It's about 90 min. To get to one of the harbors (Terracina or Formia or Anzio) where you can catch a fast ferry or hydrofoil. The sea crossing on a fast hydrofoil is 75 minutes. A slow ferry is 2.5 hours. It's cheaper than Cinque Terre or the Amalfi Coast because the place has not been discovered by non Italians. You will be the only American there and they'll ask you for autographs (most of the people who live there have never seen an American except for in the movies). Do it soon, because a soon as Rick Steves makes the place known to America, it will be the end of the place, just like with the Cinque Terre. Rick Steve's does more damage than a tsunami
Hoe would you get there from Rome? Thanks Roberto
Ponza is the main island of the Ponziane Islands. You can reach Ponza via fast ferry or hydrofoil from the following port towns (in order of distance from Rome): Anzio Terracina Formia
Naples. Except from Naples, which is a little more distant from the islands, the crossing time from the other 3 towns (Anzio, Terracina, Formia) is more or less the same since they are almost equidistant from the islands (Terracina is only slightly closer). You can reach any of the above port towns from Rome via train in a little over 1 hour to 90 minutes. Use the website below to find train schedules, trains are frequent. (The station for Formia is called Formia-Gaeta). Use a date that is within a week from now. Schedules are loaded weekly but won't change significantly between now and this summer. www.trenitalia.com Below is a list of ferry or hydrofoil companies that operate boats from the above ports to Ponza Island. This list is only in Italian, but use it to get the websites of the ferry companies to see their schedules. Then decide from which port town to get the boat from (Anzio, Terracina, Formia) based on the scheduled departure that is more convenient for you. The ferry crossing time varies depending on type of ferry. A hydrofoil, or "Aliscafo" in Italia is faster than a Ferry, "Traghetto" in Italian, however a "Traghetto Veloce", or fast ferry is not that much slower. A crossing from Terracina with a high speed catamaran Ponza Jet is only 50 minutes. The r/t boat ticket is generally less than 35 euro, even with the faster boats. From Rome the fastest is probably a hydrofoil with the Vetor company from Anzio. Anzio is only one hour from Rome and the Vetor Aliscafo (hydrofoil) takes only 70 min. http://www.ponza.it/ponza-arrivi/1a.asp

I agree with Roberto about Ponza, at least based on what a friend of mine has told me. Her sister lives in Italy so she visits all the time. They routinely go to Ponza in the summer, and it sounds as if it's a summmer-oriented place as far as tourism goes.
Thankyou for the info really appreciate it Roberto,by the way ill be in Rome in October would you know if islands will be assesible that time of the yr?
The island are accessible year around. People actually live there and they need service to the mainland, although ferry service may be reduced off season. October weather however may not be ideal to enjoy those places, especially the second half of the month when it tends to be rainy. Just see what he weather is like when you are there and if summer weather holds, take a chance and go. I'm sure it's going to be cheap in the fall and not crowded at all.
