Just back: RS Venice, Florence, Rome in 11 days

Just returned from Italy with the RS Venice, Florence, Rome tour. It was my 4th with ETBD, and it was perfect as usual. A few tips I wanted to mention.

Really, really prepare for heat and humidity. We knew it would be hot and air conditioning slim, but it was really relentless. Ladies, sundresses are perfect right now. I was really happy I took wet wipes, but wished I'd had a bandana or something to wipe the sweat off. Definitely take advantage of the siesta time to rest during the day to get away from the crowds and heat. Don't worry trying to "fit in" in these big cities. Wear your sneakers if you want to- plenty of Europeans are! My husband really like the pants that zip off the legs- good for churches. Eat lots of gelato because it cools you off and it's just good. The buses in Rome smell absolutely disgusting on a hot day when they are crowded...Try to use some Italian greetings and phrases. They love it and you will be much more well received. Do all the research you can- it pays off.

I realize these are random thoughts, but I'm still recovering from the 10.5 hour flight yesterday. Please feel free to PM me if you have specific questions about the RS tour.

Welcome home, Angela. I'm glad you mentioned the sneakers - we saw them everywhere and on plenty of Italians. White ones, too!

Angela,

Excellent idea about the bandana! They can also be dipped in cool water for use on the back of the neck. I always carry one to tropical destinations - I never thought of one in Italy. I'll be taking one with me this year! (July/August trip!)

Safe Travels!

We too just returned from Italy. I'll add that I was really glad I brought 2 pairs of sandals in addition to my trail shoes (for hiking CT). I needed to switch off between the 2 pairs of sandals to keep my feet happy.

I am not familiar with RS or ETBD. What does this stand for?

My husband and I are going to Italy the end of April.

We are trying to decide to go on our own, or escorted tour.

It will be our first trip to Europe. Thanks.

Susie,

RS = Rick Steves
ETBD = Europe through the back door

Group tour or independent? There are pluses and minuses to both. The pluses of one are pretty much the minuses of the other. Except for the budget - group tours are more expensive - you are paying for the services.

On a tour, all the planning and arrangements are done for you. Flip it, on your own, all of that is on you. Some people find the planning is half the fun. Others don't have the time and/or the inclination.

On a tour, you go with the plan, no choice of hotels or daily itineraries. Flip it, on your own, you choose the hotel level and location, go to the sites you choose and stay as long or short as you want. Of course, you have to get from place to place on your own, but you don't have to wait for everyone to board the bus.

Sometimes it's good to find a compromise, taking a multi-day tour for part of the trip or taking day tours.

I like going independently. I've been to Italy twice on my own and had a great time, in large part thanks to all the assistance and advice from folks on the helpline.

Angela,

Thanks for posting the comments about your trip. I also found it somewhat hot and humid in Europe (at least when it wasn't pouring rain). It's been hot at home the last few days, but it's a "dry" heat so I find it easier to tolerate.

I've also been on four RS tours, and just returned from Europe a few days ago. Although my flight was 9 hours exactly from Frankfurt, I'm still recovering from jet lag. It will probably take me a week or so to get back to normal.

I assume like the rest of us, you're already planning your next RS tour?

Cheers!
