June or July Italy Trains

I need to buy train tickets from Milan-Venice-Florence & Rome for the month of June or July but can't find some anywhere. I don't want to buy them in Italy because maybe they're sold out. Any suggestions?

You're just a bit early. They go on sale no more than 120 days in advance. Use Captaintrain.com to check availability. You'll see them on there as soon as they can be purchased for the dates you want. I'm currently waiting to buy tickets for early June and they're not out yet. If you're concerned about forgetting, you can use this date calculator to subtract 120 days from the date you want to travel and mark it on your calendar to purchase that day.

Tickets go on sale about three months in advance. Schedules are currently published through June 11 for most trains; see also How to Look Up Train Schedules and Routes Online. Trains are not likely to sell out, although the advance-discount prices do, or a certain class of service could fill up closer to departure.

The trains rarely sell out and even if a particular train were to sell out, there'd be another train along in an hour or so. The main reason to buy advance tickets is for the substantial savings, but keep in mind that the least expensive Super Economy tickets are non-changeable and non-refundable once purchased. Also, many of the trains on the routes you mentioned have compulsory seat reservations, which are specific to train, date and departure time. Therefore the tickets you buy can ONLY be used on the ONE train listed on the ticket. If you board the wrong train by mistake, you'll be subject to hefty fines which will be collected on the spot!

Laura - I'm a bit confused by your reply. Yes, I can see schedules for June, but tickets are not on sale yet for any dates in early June. Trenitalia, ItaloTreno, and CaptainTrain all show tickets unavailable for June 8 (the date I'm interested in). Also, most sources I've checked say that high-speed Frecce tickets are usually available 120 days, not 90 days, in advance. The routes jo4lop lists above are all high-speed trains, so I'd expect them to be available earlier. In any case, it's neither 90 nor 120 days in advance yet, so I assume that's why tickets aren't on sale yet.

Am I misunderstanding something? Are you able to see tickets on sale in June, or only see the scheduled times? I don't want to give OP a wrong answer. Thanks for your input.

I think they are available 120 days (they were recently for me). I checked mid June and can't buy yet but you can purchase June 1st from Milan to Florence.

Nelly in some websites I can't even see the schedule, other websites I can only see the schedule but can not buy them.

  1. You can choose between Trenitalia and its private competitor on major routes: www.italotreno.it Sometimes it's cheaper and their complimentary wi-fi on board works better.
  2. There is a national timetable change on June 12. No train after that date, apart from a few EuroCity, will be posted for months. The high speed trains will be the first ones to be loaded in the system. Do not trust any reseller that sells tickets for trains running after June 12, they hope nothing will change to get your money asap.
  3. You can get any kind of tickets 120 days in advance, now it's February 2 so you can't purchase anything after May 31. Tickets for June 1 will go on sale one minute after midnight (italian time, of course).
  4. Train tickets rarely, if ever, sell out.

There is a difference between when schedules are published and when tickets go on sale. Thanks for correcting my 90 days to 120 for the ticket-sales period. But note that either ticket sales or schedule posting for travel after the June 12 schedule change may not happen bam-on-time. For the faster trains that Jo is taking, they probably will be, but for regional trains, schedules may not be posted until June.

Last year the freccia trains posted 120 days (give or take a day) in advance right through the June schedule change with no hiccup. Italo posted fares even sooner than 120 days out, and also right through the schedule change.
