Hello Everyone, So recently my boyfriend and I planned a trip to Italy for 2 weeks at the end of July however something came up and we are unable to go at that time. We are now thinking from September 6th to September 22. We are traveing to Milan, Venice, Amalfi Coast/Sorrento and Rome. I am worried it may be chilly. Howver people have told me it's not as busy as in July. What are the pros/cons as to traveling in Septemeber rather than July? Any tips if I go in September? Thanks for all your help in advance! Katie
LOL. Sorry for that, but I think you lucked out. You will be very fortunate if it's chilly anywhere in Italy in September. Especially since you're in Toronto. Give the choice I would always opt for September, not quite as hot, not quite as many tourists. Just curious - why Milan?
Holy jeez - we were in Florence last year during the 3rd week of Sept - it had to have been 25-30 celcius! Sept will be sooooo much better. We've taken all our trips over mid Sept to early Oct...I have pics of myself in Rome mid-Sept wearing tank tops. The only thing, of course, daylight hours are shorter, and it does cool off at night (just like here in Canada). On my tank top day, I ended up buying a scarf type thing to keep my arms warm when the sun went down, so you may want to carry a pashmina/scarf or a light sweater/jacket, unless your hotel is conveniently located to go back to when it starts getting dark.
...and Chani asks why Milan? Having been to Milan and Florence, I would def recommend Florence over Milan...in Milan, we did the Duomo and...that was pretty much it. Headed to lake Como for a half day. We only had a full day and a morning in Florence, but we squeezed in so much and weren't disappointed at all.
Pros: 1. slightly fewer tourists, especially on the coastal areas, where July is really busy 2. temperatures will be hot but more bearable (sometimes), at least at night and early morning. cons:
1. shorter daylight
September is better than July for many reasons. The biggest disadvantage for September would be shorter daylight hours. I would still choose September.
September is still hot in Italy. This time I am going in October.
September is going to be so much better than July!! You'll be cooler and the sights won't be as crowded--all in all a much happier trip, in my opinion. As for the shorter daylight hours, sure, but Rome and Venice are amazing by moonlight! What could be better? I don't see any disadvantages!
The Amalfi Coast should be very warm, the sea temperature is ideal for swimming, and it is still busy with everything open. It is a very popular month for Northern European visitors and the season does not really finish until the end of October. There is a higher chance of thunderstorms as you go through the month but they usually pass quickly and can be quite spectacular! Here are the September daylight hours for the area http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/astronomy.html?n=172&month=9&year=2013&obj=sun&afl=-11&day=1
When I was in Rome in September, it was still warm enough that all the restaurants had outdoor seating for dinner. I loved this - it was like the whole center had turned into a big party. So yes, as everyone is saying, it isn't "chilly" at that time.
