We are not traveling to Rome until the third week in July so I went on today to purchase tickets to the Vatican Museums and it shows none available. for the three weekdays we are going ti be there. Is this normal? Am I missing something?

Vatican Museums tickets go on sale 60 days in advance at midnight Rome time, so they're only available until July 5 right now.

Are there third party tours / ticket sources that you would recommend? The main site is sold out for when we visit in June.

Pete, I also looked into tours by “Walks of Italy” that looked good but I couldn’t get the Rick Steves discount code to work. I haven’t chosen yet due to the this problem and the chance to maybe purchase regular tickets at 60 days.

Put a notification on your calendar, have the site bookmarked and even do a "dry run" the day before to make sure you know exactly where to click. I got tickets for 6/24 two weeks ago and I went on the site at the stroke of midnight Rome time (3pm PST). Good luck! Rome is turning into the same headache as concert tickets.
