We will be visiting Italy in July after 10 days in Spain (Barcelona for work and 4 days nearby). We are two adults with two teenage daughters. Our Italian leg is as follows:
Fly to Florence from Barcelona (3 nights Florence)
Rent car in FL and drive through 'hill towns' (2 nights) - this is the vaguest part of our trip so far.
Drop car in La Spezia and train to Manarola (3 nights)
Train to Bolzano (2 nights)
Train to Venice (2 nights)
Fly home from Venice.
Originally we had thought to rent a car for a larger portion of the trip, but friends and posts on this website led us to use primarily trains. Is there an additional charge for dropping a car in La Spezia? I can't determine this from the rental sites I have looked at.
I had also originally thought to go straight to Cinque Terre from Florence, but decided to avoid the weekend, which may be silly, however the trip by car through the hill towns appeals to us.
Thoughts on Venice in July are helpful as well (crowds, heat etc), we can fly home from another locale.
I have AirBnB apartments booked for Florence and CT, and plan to book similarly for other locales.
Any thoughts on transport, weather etc are helpful as we are newbies to Italy.
