Jubilee of Mercy Pilgrimage Path

Hi All,

i got this information

JUBILEE OF MERCY
ROME, 12/08/2015 - 11/20/2016
It's important to know that the final part of the route, from Castel Sant'Angelo to the Holy Door, is reserved exclusively to registered pilgrims. That's why all pilgrims who intend to cross the Holy Door must necessarily register on the official site of the Jubilee.

i have registered as the pilgrims for the Holy Door but will make my route in reverse of the one mentioned above. I'll walk from St Peter's Square to Castel San't Angelo instead. Is this permissible? Also would the route along Castel San't Angelo and Via della Conciliazione be closed for this event or Borgo Santo Spirito is the one that gets closed?

TIA

No, it's not permissible. You must follow the route laid out for everyone.

Hi Donna,

thanks so much for the info. any idea of which street going to be closed exclusively for the pilgrims? i doubt that they'll close Via Della Conciliazione as I plan to catch the bus from there as well.

TIA

You may have to wait to find out about the bus route - sometimes they are changed due to special events, but if you walk a few blocks across the bridge, buses probably will be running normally.

Nobody knows now about the bus routes. Most lanes of via della Conciliazione will be closed to traffic and reserved to walking pilgrims. The city administration would prefer closing completely the alley to motor traffic while the Vatican would prefer to keep at least one lane open. The final decision probably will be according to how many people will arrive. I understand they can switch configurations in a few minutes.

Hi All,

thanks for the info. I just got reply from the website that put that useful information. The foot path won't be closed. people could still walk both ways (though it is not an official pilgrims path). The registration is for entering the Holy Door. as for the bus, he recommends this site http://viaggiacon.atac.roma.it/?service=calcolapercorso&da=piazza%20pia%20conciliazione&dac=roma&a=vittorio%20emanuele%20argentina&aac=roma&data=23/11/2015&ora=16:40&mezzo=1&tipo=1

which got me confuse using it. anyway if Piazza Pia Conciliazione got closed, i've plan B to Corso Vittorio Emanuelle - Tassoni bus stop. the bus traffic should be fine there.

TIA

Hi All,

i just want to summarize my unofficial 'Pilgrimage' experience. I remember Nigel suggested for it but I couldn't find Nigel's post somehow.
it was VERY QUIET including my visit to the Vatican Museum. i thought initially because we arrived pretty early around 8am but it was all the way quiet until we finished around lunch time and continued to Vatican Museum afterwards. the pilgrim route which is from Castel San Angelo to St. Peter's ground via VIA de la Conciliazione is not 'that' exclusive to pilgrims as there're metal fences for the pilgrims but there's in and out access midway so others could enter the path too. But when we wanted to enter St Peter's ground then the permit was checked. Soldiers were everywhere but i did not see anyone got randomly checked. i was very satisfied with the security as aside from the strictness , they still implied the politeness and understanding to the visitors (this applied to other attractions such as the Colosseum too).

The Holy Door themselves, since they are opened to the side and in St Peter's case there's another set of glass doors in front, we barely felt passing a 'Holy' Door. me and my mum have to got back and looked for the Door since we're afraid of taking the wrong door :D The Holy Stairs in St John Lateran was an interesting one as I just knew on the spot, pilgrims have to kneel step by step of the stairs. Waiting for my mum at the base of the stairs, looking at pilgrims young and old, good and bad knees, all knelt down reaching the painting of Jesus in the Cross at the end of the stair, feeling their emotion and determination praying until the end of the steps despite of the pain and difficulty endured taking the steps was one heart wrenching experience i'll never forget.

overall it's a wonderful experience and had a miracle Papal Mass too which i'd share on my other post

Jen, thanks so much for the follow-up report, and I'm very glad that your time in Rome was successful!

Hindsight is always 20-20, and there were multiple reports both during and after the Christmas holidays about the lightness of the crowds: many, many more visitors had been expected during that time. There could have been any number of reasons for that - including security concerns - but whatever the cause, it was not what had been anticipated.

I took several looks at the live cam of St Peter's Square at times when it was expected to have been busy, and was surprised to see it so empty!

Hi Kathy,

sorry for the very late response. been very busy lately and time flies. now me and hubby start preparing for the summer time already phewww.

I would like to THANK YOU for your help. we wouldn't be able to get thorough information for the holiday without this forum!

it was surprisingly quite too not only in Vatican but in Rome. Even we could take picture freely in Vatican Museum's halls. Our tour guide in Collosseum also mentioned that it's getting quieter after the Paris attack. There are much less visitors than usual. Now after the Brussels bombing, lots of my friends reroute their holiday plan out of Europe and UK but that does not stop me and hubby from visiting UK and Scotland this summer :D

I think Rome in general was surprised at the lightness of the crowd!

Applause for planning another trip abroad regardless of unfortunate events; you're going to have a marvelous time! :O)
