Any recommendations who to use for a tour of the Jewish ghetto and synagogues in Venice ?
I did the tour offered through the local Jewish museum. I believe others offered (Viator, et al) are just selling a marked up version of the same thing.
I did as Eric did.
I think the Jewish museum tour is good enough.
I’ve done both the official self-guided tour (with the app) and a more complete guided tour through GYG that lasted about 2 hours.
The local guided tour is fairly short (unless it has changed since May) at around 45 minutes - so I gave it a skip.
I think the self-guided tour is fine, even if the app isn’t the smoothest, but it does provide a lot of info, and at least you can move at your own pace. All tours include the same two synagogues.
I did this tour a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it! The Jewish Museum of Venice (Museo Ebraico di Venezia) is the main place to start—they organize official guided tours that include the synagogues in the Ghetto. The guides are knowledgeable, and you get a lot of insight into both the history and daily life of the community.
If you’d prefer something more personalized, there are also licensed local guides who specialize in Jewish heritage tours in Venice. Many of them combine the synagogues with a walking tour through Cannaregio, which gives you more context of how the ghetto developed.
Either way, I’d recommend booking ahead, especially if you’re visiting during high season, since tours are small and fill quickly.
