We will arrive into Rome and have some time planned in Tuscany but are looking to pick up our car upon arrival and need to get out of Rome to find a small place to stay 1 night to catch our breath before heading to Tuscany for our scheduled stay. Does anyone have a suggestion for a place to stay. Also we are looking for a reasonable Rome hotel for 2 or 3 nights upon our retuen so we can explore Rome. Any recommendations and thank you.

Check out the tiny island of Orbetello. Just north of Chivitavechio, north of the airport. Porto San Stefano is a wonderful jet lag sanctuary! It is a small fishing village with simple restaurants. We stayed two nights in 2004 and thought it simply wonderful!

Neil,
Consider taking the train to Orvieto. Stay the night then pickup a car. While Orvieto is a lovely town the big benefit is no driving while jet lagged and avoiding the airport surcharge on the rental.

I would suggest taking the train to Orvieto and picking up the car there.It is a nice town to spend a night in.On return you could stay there again and drop the car.Hertz has a rental agency at the train station.
