Thinking about 3 or 4 weeks in Puglia in January to get away from the northeast US winter. Would like to “live like a local” in one or two home bases rather than touring through multiple stops (have done that). Research and feedback recommend splitting time between Lecce and Monopoli. They appear to be likely to still have some amenities available in January, and provide slightly different vibes. They also have transit options for occasional day trips to other towns, but we’re open to renting a car for a short time as well.
We want a home base with walkable access to things like a town center or plaza for passeggiata, food shopping, restaurants, etc., rather than rural isolation.
Does this sound feasible? Wondering if anyone has experience with a winter getaway like this.
If so – looking for lodging with a kitchen and comfortable enough to spend time in for possible rainy days.
Don’t need extravagance but also not on shoestring budget. Hoping winter rates are somewhat reduced. I know it’s important to ensure the lodging has ample heat.

I’d go with Lecce, I’d feel a bit shuttered up in Monopoli in January I fear. Do a deep dive with weather websites like Wunderground. Lecce is larger and I think would offer more to do. I’d also consider Bari even though it’s a large city, you’d have more day trip options .

We've been thinking along the same lines for a winter getaway and will look forward to your posts. We'll be in Puglia for a month - September - for our first visit to that area.

For that length of time in January, I’d choose a larger town/city with good transport options.
I would split my stay between Bari and Lecce.

From what I've read, Lecce sounds more like an elegant, slower-paced town with Baroque architecture, rich history (and more recommended), while Bari sounds more metropolitan - but Bari has excellent train hub and proximity to more day-trip destinations. Anyone been to both with opinion?

I like Roberto’s idea to split it, but if you have to choose one, I’d read up on the immediate environs of each and decide which day trips appeal to you the most. There will be a different selection just due to proximity.
Even though I enjoyed Bari, Lecce would appeal to me more as a day to day place because I like quiet, and the beauty there just sucked me in. It helped that I had a great place to stay in Lecce (so much I returned and stayed there again, Roof Barocco Suites), and in comparison I only stayed one night in a tiny b&b both times I stayed in Bari, to be fair. A lot of the day trips I would want to do would be easier from Bari, but they would be relatively easy from the neighboring towns as well, so maybe Monopoli would not feel too small to you.
