Jan - getting from London to Cinque Terre

Hi, I'm heading to the Cinque Terre in late July. Will fly out of London. As a solo female traveller, I didn't want to arrive in Cinque Terre at night so have decided to stay overnight somewhere and then train it to La Spezia the next day and then on to Monteresso where I'm staying. I'm thinking that I will fly from London to Milan, stay at a hotel close to the train station overnight and then just walk to the train station the next morning to go to La Spezia. I'm open to flying into Pisa or Genoa or anywhere else that would easily connect me to a train the next day and just looking at things like the ease of getting from the airport to a hotel and then onto a train station the next day. Any thoughts on what would be best?

Depending on the day of the week you plan to travel, easyjet or ryanair have flights that go to Pisa or Genoa that arrive early enough in the day for you to get to Monterosso before dark.( I did not search for Florence)

While I understand your concerns, I do not think that arriving at night as a solo female traveller in a Cinque Terre village poses any specific risk.
And yes, flying to Pisa will get you much closer to the 5 Terre to start with (or Genoa, but in Genoa you need to take a bus to the Principe (or is it Brignole? I forgot) train station first).

You may want to note that the average sunset time in July in the Cinque Terre is about 20:45 (8:45PM). That's sunset not sundown.

These are also very small towns......your walk from the train station to your accomodations will probably be no more than 5 minutes.

I'm confused - your post title talks about January, when everything will be closed for the winter, yet folks are talking about July???

Before and after dark there is nothing to be worried about in tiny seaside villages; nobody would think the same of the area around Milano Centrale or around any railway station in a major city. This is a complete reversal of perspective from what happens in real life.

Nigel--I was at first confused until I realized her name is Jan. Why it's in the title, I have no idea.

Sorry, my first post and seemed to have mucked it up with the name thing. With the great advice given, I may reconsider staying overnight and instead head straight to Cique Terre. Thanks again people.
