James May: Our Man in Italy

A new series on Amazon Prime has James May traveling through Italy.

If you're not sure who James May is, he was one of the presenters on Britain's Top Gear and has done a few comedic documentaries on different subjects. Two years ago, he did a series "Our Man in Japan" and it was very entertaining.

I've watched the first episode of his Italy show and it was in Sicily. It was fun and great scenery. He even did a segment on the 1 Euro houses.

Really enjoyed his Japan series. Can't wait to see him in Italy.

A friendly note that James's type of humor is not always family-friendly. If you're thinking he's another Stanley Tucci, think again.

I found the episode pretty flat. As he only half jokingly said, he wanted to go visit things that were interesting to him but the director and the producer wanted him to engage in hilarious stunts. Such is reality TV.

Thank you for this bringing this series to my attention. I have started planning a trip to Sicily - and I loved Top Gear.

I am currently watching the Japan series while I am on the treadmill and saw the Italy trailer in the list of episodes. I like James May so I’m looking forward to the series, Maybe I’ll be so distracted I’ll stay on the treadmill longer!

If you do like James, look into the long list of shows he's done over the years outside the Three Stooges. I was very fond of his Reassembler show, it kept me occupied on the elliptical.

He also did one where he tried to get school kids interested in building model airplanes, and another about the history of various toys and games.

I started watching the series based on this thread. I like it better than the Tucci series, because its less polished and less focused on fancy restaurants I'll never get to.

I have seen the episode about Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna, to check what they visited. I liked his style and to be funny but not too much. I like even that he doesn't try to hide very much his feeling about the activities he's engaged to. Note for example how is bored of some activities like try to play an ancient sport (activities where tourists are often involved without being really interested to). And on the opposite how exited is when is visiting the engine casting department of Ferrari: a visit that could be considered boring for the 80% of tourists, but his eyes are shining and is really fond to be there!

Just watched the episode where he visits Rome and surrounding areas, honestly I found it terribly boring. He’s humorous at times, but the segments just weren’t that interesting. I guess they were going for some off the beaten path kind of things but ends up flat in my opinion.
