Its my Wife's Birthday in Rome on a Sunday

Hey Stevers

I have my Rick Steves Best of Italy book in hand and its been my Bible for me and my wife's upcoming 10 day trip to Italy. So I've hit a road block with planning. Its my wife's birthday on a Sunday in Rome and I don't know what to do? Looking for some savvy Rome, Sunday ideas for activities and meals. The one thing she said that she wanted to do was to eat pasta that was mixed in a wheel of cheese in front of her table side. We have already planned to do the Ancient Rome, Heart of Rome walk and Dolce Vita walk. We are staying in the Pantheon area. Any experienced Rome travelers have any ideas. Thanks

You might consider a trip out to Ostia Antica. Easy to get there using public transit, usually not crowded (may be different on Sunday), and only uses about three quarters of your day. Can't help with her specific meal request, but since it's her birthday why not splurge for a really elegant dinner. Can't really help with a specific recommendation as we usually eat frugally when in Rome.

I've not been here but this restaurant reportedly does the pasta-in-cheese-wheel prep (Bucatini Amatriciana Flambè o Spaghetti Parmigiana Flambè) and has largely positive (ya can't please everyone) reviews. It's a bit of a walk from your accommodations but it'll be good for working off the carbs and calories! :O)

Have you made reservations for Galleria Borghese? Great museum, can be seen in 2 hours and has excellent crowd control due to a mandatory reservation system. But does your wife's birthday fall on a first Sunday of a month (could be a problem if your trip is soon)?

Otherwise, I'll second a walk on the Appia Antica. Sundays, when they close the road to traffic, is a great day to do that one.

maybe a Tiber river cruise

Ummmm, noooo, I wouldn't personally recommend doing one of those. A cruise on the Tiber wouldn't be like doing one in, say, Paris or Amsterdam. The walls on the side of the river are built too high to see much of anything. Also, the Tiber is usually pretty low, green and sluggish in summer: not really something I'd want to go floating on for a special occasion (or any occasion at all, really).

We just returned from our first trip to Italy on the RS Heart of Italy Tour. We arrived on a Saturday and before we met the tour on Sunday, we booked tickets to the Borghese Galleria. Simply stunning! You get up close and personal to artwork that takes your breath away. The walk through the Villa (the park surrounding the Galleria) was lovely, and you'll see many families doing their Sunday thing. (The Piazza di Popolo was full of kids' teams playing soccer to loud music in front of ancient pillars and fountain.) After the Galleria, we walked to the Spanish Steps stopping for pizza and beer at La Pomodorino, a casual neighborhood eatery where we were the only ones who didn't speak Italian. We felt very Roman!

There are a number of galleries and museums open on Sunday, but some restaurants and shops are closed. If your wife is committed to that particular dish, by all means, search it out. I remember quite a discussion of cacao e pepe on TA. You can find reviews there and hours for a place near where you will be that day. While I planned ahead A LOT, listing restaurants and printing maps, we found the most memorable meals were the ones we stumbled upon. When we were tired and hungry, there was always something fabulous to eat nearby. Watch for happy people serving/eating food that looks good to you.

You'll enjoy the walks, and if you have downloaded Rick's app, you'll like having a guide in your ear so you can look around you instead of at the guide book. But take the maps from the guidebook! SO VALUABLE and clear. Have a good time!!

Ciao!
