Need some help w/itinery. Spending 2 nights in Venice, I night in Lake Garda then two in Milan. On the full day, going to see The Last Supper. now is where it gets tough.......we have 4days left & currently have those days/nights planned for lake Como but we will not have a car. We want to do day trips from L Como but we are confused on how....
Can we get to L MAggiori from there or is it better to extend one night @ Milan and go to L Maggior from there?. We could then go to Como for three days prior to our departure to home. Really need help!
Susan, Could you provide a bit of further information? Are you interested on visiting Lago Maggiore only as a day trip? What sights are you interested in seeing there? Although it's certainly feasible, I wouldn't suggest doing a day trip to Lago Maggiore from Lago di Como. The train route usually means going back through Milan, which will mean a trip of at least 3H in either direction. In the same situation, I'd probably drop one day from Milan (allow just enough time to see the Last Supper), and use the extra day to provide a bit of travel time. Spend two days in Varenna (Como) and two days in Stresa (Maggiore). Both Varenna and Stresa are only about an hour from Milan by train, a very easy journey. You could also extend your time in Milan by one day, and just take a day trip to Lago Maggiore, as you mentioned. However, I'd much prefer staying a day or two in Stresa rather than in Milan! Happy travels!
So.....from Milan go to LMaggiori then back to Milan to get to LComo? Seems like a lot of train time. Can you get to L Como from L MAggiori w/out going through Milan?
Susan, If travelling by train, I don't believe there's an easy way of getting from Lago di Como to Lago Maggiorre without going through Milano Centrale. If there was a way to do that, I suspect the travel times would be considerably longer, so it wouldn't be practical for a day trip.
