my wife and i are first time visitors, traveling late october. so far i an planning 2 nights for each city ie varenna, venice, cinque terre, sienna, and rome with a day trip to florence. my question is whether i should limit venice to one night and add another night to tuscany. We are more interested in outdoor endeavors than museums. Thanks for any insight on different itineraries
You are trying to do too much. Half of your time will be spent checking into and out of hotels, going to and from train stations and traveling to your destination. Venice is at least a week to enjoy it. I would limit myself to 2 locations. The weather will still be okay in late October, temperaturewise, but you may get some rain.
Hi Steve,
I was in Italy in late October 2006. The other posters are correct in that you may want to consider reducing the number of cities you are planning. Tuscany is a great place for outdoor adventures. You can book day long bike tours, hike, visit vineyards, etc. Late October may be chilly in the evenings and mornings, but you should still have some nice days to spend outside.
Enjoy!
Check when daylight savings time goes into effect. If you are in Tuscany, you loose light earlier if you are trying to do outside activities and want to get back to your b&b in the daylight. We could only go until about 3-4 pm when we were touring in the car. I'd do the two nights in Venice. So much to see and wander and get lost in the alley ways to see how the locals live.
As a general rule, we try to spend at least 3 nights in each city. On our recent trip, we made 2 exceptions: we stole 1 night from Vernazza to give to Rome, so we had 4 in Rome and only 2 in Vernazza. So, if you have 11 nights, I would only visit 3 or 4 locations.
