Itinerary with kids

Hi,

My family is planning a 3 week trip to Italy next year at the end of June/beginning of July timeframe. Our kids will be 6 and 8 at this time and are good travelers having spent a month in Greece not 2 years ago. That said, I'm thinking the following:

Milan, 1 day ( Last Supper )
Genoa, 1 day ( big aquarium )
Cinque Terre, 5 days ( religious holidays of John the Baptist/ St. Peter and Paul )
Tuscany, 7 days ( agriturismo, visit Sienna, Florence, and hill towns. Try to catch the Palio trials )
Bologna, 1 day
Venice, 2 days
Lake Como, 3 days.

We are purposely avoiding Rome and concentrating on Northern Italy. Ideally, we'd find 3 places to crash but that is difficult to do. We are also contemplating heading to Switzerland for a couple of days and skipping Lake Como.

Any thoughts ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Just got back with my kids a month ago. Enjoy the planning, and then enjoy the trip even more!!

Of your list, we went to Lake Como and Venice, with a few hour stop in Florence. My thoughts...

Venice was awesome. We stayed at the Hotel al Piave, which had a family room that worked really well for us (we were a party of five, so harder to find a room than party of 4). Loved feeding the pigeons early in the morning (save bread from the night before) when no one was around. The pigeons would land right on the kids and they went NUTS!! So fun. We skipped the gondola and went for the water taxi to the airport (about the same cost) Kids LOVED the water taxi. We arrived via train on day 1, had two full days and then left morning of day 4 (so 3 nights). We had wandered and seen everything. You could do it in two easily.

Lake Como was amazingly beautiful. We stayed in Varenna the first two nights at Villa Cipressi, which has rooms that will fit your entire family for about 140 euros. I can look it up. Not sure you need three days. We were there 3 days, but one of them was supposed to be for horseback riding (they flaked on us which is anohter story). Plan on touring the lake in one day b/c it cost about 16 euros everytime we went anywhere on the boat (adds up quickly!) We visited Villa Balbianello, which is where Queen Amidala got married in Star Wars. Beautiful, but with a surprising interior. Not cheap to that either, but we did love it. Plan on getting off the train in about two seconds b/c we really did almost miss getting off and wound up holding the doors open and throwing bags off and screaming alot. Very exciting and funny now.

Florence, you absolutely have to climb the Duomo. the kids LOVED it.

Visit Orvieto if you're in the area. Fun towers to climb up, amazing well to climb down and an underground to explore. Could be the kids favorite place. Oh - they also have a funicular. Cool!

Have an amazing trip! Merritt

Chris:

Looks like a great itinerary. I have a couple of observations/suggestions.

  1. In 2004 we were in Monterosso for their festival (I think it is St. John - it was June 22 or 23) with the kids. What a wonderful experience. Our children were included in all sorts of local festivities and the huge bonfire on the beach. Also one of the very best fireworks displays I have ever seen - unforgettable. The kids are still talking about it. We stayed at Hotel Villa Steno which I recommend.

  2. In Tuscany we rented a villa in the little town of Panzano - exactly between Florence and Siena and did day trips all over the region - it worked so well we returned in 2007. It is so relaxing in the Tuscan countryside. We stayed at Il Palagio (www.infochianti.com) - the place is beautiful and the pool is a sure-fire kid pleaser. The village of Panzano is very small, has a great enoteca for a drink or informal meals (great for kids) it is called Enoteca Baldi. The village has great restaurants, a fine gelateria, and Italy's most famous butcher (Dario Cecchini - just google him - you'll love it!)

Have fun.
