Beginning to plan our 2nd trip to Italy for late April/Early May 2014. Last time, we visited the Amalfi Coast and Rome. We liked them both so much we want to return! We love the history, architecture/ruins, and the coast. Two itineraries we're considering are below. Trying to keep boots on the ground as close to 14 days as possible. Flight pricing/availability from US West Coast a consideration as well. Struggling with what would be the best way to organize the spots we want to visit. Would love opinions! Itinerary 1 Day 1 - Arrive Venice Day 2 - Venice Day 3 - Venice Day 4 - Train to Cinque De Terre (CT) not sure which town to stay in yet Day 5 - CT Day 6 - CT Day 7 - Train to Sorrento (stopping in Pisa? what do you do w/your bags?) Day 8 - Sorrento (day trip to Positano & Amalfi) Day 9 - Sorrento (day trip to Pompeii) Day 10 - Sorrento Day 11 - Rome (take train, changing trains in Naples) Day 12 - Rome Day 13 - Rome (day trip to Orvieto) Day 14 - Rome Day 15 - Fly home out of Rome Itinerary 2 Day 1 - Arrive Rome Day 2 - Rome Day 3 - Rome (day trip to Orvieto) Day 4 - Rome Day 5 - Sorrento (via trains, changing in Naples) Day 6 - Sorrento Day 7 - Sorrento (day trip to Positano & Amalfi) Day 8 - Sorrento (day trip to Pompeii) Day 9 - CT (via train?)) Day 10 - CT Day 11 - CT Day 12 - Venice (train from CT stopping in Pisa?) Day 13 - Venice Day 14 - Venice
Day 15 - Fly home out of Venice
TJ:
I lean toward your #1, but be aware it is a long day to Sorrento from the CT. First to Rome, then to Napoli, then to Sorrento. It's equally long the other direction of course. :-) As I understand it, flights out of Venice to the US depart ridculously early making for an unfortunate end to a trip, IMO. Since you have already been to Sorrento and the AC, I might offer the suggestion that you skip it this trip since you are going to be seaside in the CT anyway. Then add a night each to Rome and Venice, and stay 2 nights in Orvieto to give you a taste of the hilltowns. That way you are reapeating one place you loved (Rome) that has endless things to do in it, and adding some new places: Venice, CT and maybe Orvieto. You could use your extra day in Rome to daytrip to Pompeii, or substitute Ostia Antica which we really love. While in Venice, be sure to grab a sunny day and head out to Murano, Burano and (don't miss it) Torcello for a day of island hopping.
Fly into Naples Take curreri viaggi bus at airport to Sorrento On return take bus to Napoli Centrale Train naples-rome Train Rome-Ct Train CT-Venice Fly out of Venice
or switch around Venice and CT fly out of Pisa
Thanks for the input...after reading some posts,it sounds like flying into Venice may be better option. I would like to go to the Amalfi coast last but I am not sure we could easily fly out of Naples if we were making our home base Sorrento. Given the locations we want to visit, is there a better way to organize the itinerary?
