Itinerary -- Venice, Cinque Terra, Florence

My husband and I are planning a 14 day trip to Italy Sept 2017. We like to walk/hike, take pics, looking for a balance of city and nature. We like architecture and water. We won't be renting a car, we would like to stay in B&Bs, we are in our mid 50/ early 60's.

We are thinking:
fly from Seattle to Venice
stay in Venice for four nights, maybe in the Dorsodura area
take the train to Cinque Terra
stay in Riomaggiore for four nights
hike/beach
take train to Florence
stay in Florence for four nights
take day trip to Siena

We have a couple more nights and are not sure if we should do a couple nights the end in Rome, and then fly out of Rome. Or if we should leave Rome for another time.

Any input as to tweaks to make to our itinerary or places to stay would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Its perfect how you have it.
Take your time and Leave Rome for another time.
If you can fly into Venice and out of Florence great.
You might be able to take a day trip from Venice, read a section in guide about the region surrounding Venice and decide what you are interested in and go for it

The best itinerary sequence would be:
Venice
Florence (Tuscany)
Cinque Terre
Rome

Venice with 3 nights you have time for Venice and the lagoon islands (Murano, Burano, Torcello). With 4 nights you have time for a day trip to Padua.

Florence and day trip to Siena, 4 nights (3 full days) is good. You even have time for an afternoon+dinner in Fiesole.

Cinque Terre for 4 nights is good, but you can probably do with less.

If you insert Rome in the equation, you need 3 or 4 nights there. You can do it if you decrease nights at Riomaggiore.

If you include Rome, Roberto's plan is the best, though I tend to agree with Jazz that you should not shortchange your "northern" destinations for a brief taste of the Eternal City. Without Rome, it depends on where you fly home from and what time your flight is. If it's Milan, it's less than 2 hours by train from Florence, or 3-4 hours from Monterosso. Spending your last night there is not a bad idea, there are a couple worthy sights in the city ☺

I day-tripped to Siena from Florence and was sorry I didn't manage a night or two there. Still haven't been back, though I've been to Italy several times since then.

ajsd,

"hike/beach"

Where exactly were you planning to hike? Also, where are you planning to "beach"?

I would take a night from Cinque Terre, give Stresa a couple of nights, spend the last night in Milano and fly home from there.

Thank you all for your input!
I'm sure I'll have more questions as I dive into getting everything booked!

We did Venice,Florence, C.T. Lucca. Really enjoyed Lucca. Took a great cooking class, biked the walls, and poked around. I would rob a day from Florence, didn't love it. If you think you'll be back, save Rome, but if this is a once in a lifetime trip, definitely squeeze it in there by taking a night from each spot.
