Itinerary Suggestions - Genoa to Bari

Flying Barcelona to Genoa, with a change of planes in Rome, on April 8, 2014. Have to be in Bari no later than noon on the 12th. Looking for itinerary suggestions for the four in-between days. Don't care for big cities and/or tourist traps. Planning on using trains for transportation. Should we get off the plane in Rome and explore the southwest part of the country or continue on to Genoa and then take the train southeast to Bari stopping along the way? Any towns you'd suggest to spend some time in? Thanks!

Not sure why you go to Genoa to go to Bari. Also couldn't you find a non stop to Genoa? For sure from BCN you could have flown non stop to Pisa.
You are crossing the entire Italian peninsula. So the choice of places to visit are virtually unlimited. Have you looked at an Italian guidebook to see what you might like to see?

Thanks for your response. Could not get a direct flight from BCN to Genoa. The plan was to take the train back down to Rome for nothing more than the joy of riding the train along the coast (we don't have trains in central Florida). The cruise we are boarding in Bari has had a schedule delay, so we're looking for a way to "waste" two more days without hitting the typical tourist cities.
