Itinerary Suggestions for Honeymoon in Northern Italy/Tuscany in July

Hello,

My fiance and I are trying to figure out our itinerary for our honeymoon this July. We're planning to be in Italy arriving on July 5 and flying out to Paris on July 13 (8 nights). We're looking at flights in/out of Pisa and Venice - either order. We're considering two different itineraries and would love advice for which would be better during early July, given likely very warm temperatures and crowds. We're interested in great food/wine, culture, not moving around too much (but still seeing a few areas as it's his first time to Europe), and generally experiencing the country.

First option: Cinque Terre (2-3 nights), Florence (~3 nights), Venice (~2 nights). Could go in either order, but likely in the one I've listed here. Pros: It looks like there are pretty good train connections between these. CT is on the water and so good time for being by the beach (cons - very crowded during this time of the year?).

Second option: Venice (~2 nights), Florence (2-3 nights), and surrounding/Tuscany hill towns (3-4 nights). This is where I could use specific suggestions for places that will be good to visit/stay in during this time of year. As we'll be flying in or out of Pisa on one end, we'd likely plan to visit Pisa for a few hours and potentially Lucca. We're also interested in Volterra, Montepulciano, and Siena from the reading we've done, but would consider other towns if it made more sense. I understand a car is easier in this area, though options to use public transit or reduce the total need for a car would be great. I'm thinking that going to the hill towns might somewhat help with crowds (at least compared to CT) - is that right?

Any suggestions, tips, etc. would be very welcome! Also, if this really does seem like a bad time to go to this area in general, that'd be good to know too. We had also been considering the south of France (Provence, Nice), but are strongly leaning to Italy right now.

Thanks!

Given the time of year and crowding in Venice and the Cinque Terre, I urge you to consider spending the entire time in Tuscany. Certainly you can take 3 nights in Florence, but that will be hot and crowded, too. After Florence, rent a car and head to a nice agriturismo. From there, take little jaunts to the beautiful towns you mentioned and more. And maybe just enjoy a down day relaxing by the pool at the agriturismo.

I would choose the second option. CT is tricky. It's beautiful, but so crowded in summer. As for which towns to visit, it depends on what appeals to you. There are Rick Steves' episodes available on this site, which may help give you a feel for the various hill towns. I like Montepulciano and Siena. My husband and I love Paris (our favorite city) so I would definitely go there, but keep in mind that July 14 is Bastille Day. If you are going there to celebrate then your timing is perfect. If you want to avoid the hoopla, maybe go to Paris first. One more thing, when I was looking to fly between Paris and Italy, I found Verona to be the best city for train and plane access. We trained in and flew out. It's also a lovely place to visit and in summer they have shows at the amphitheatre. Have a great trip.

Is Paris a must do on this trip? If you considered Provence and Nice why not do another trip just with France and add Paris then.

Just do Italy and you can add both Tuscany and say Italian Honeymoon Land of Lake Como to Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre

Considering its less than 7 weeks til you travel, I would look at x4 short stays of 2 nights each.
Lucca > Cinque Terre > Florence > Venice

If Cinque Terre proves impossible to find accommodation.
Lucca > Florence > Bologna or Verona >Venice

I stayed at a beautiful agriturismo outside of Siena last month and thought it would be lovely in summer and for honeymoon. Beautiful scenery and pool. We rented a car and drove to various hill town in area. The name is ll castagno.
