I'm planning to take in the Sorrento area for New Years, Landing in Rome-Is there a bus from the airport to Sorrento? I have found a flat to rent for the week, I know this is off season and the holiday but need advice on what we can do, touring the Positano, Amalfi, Ravello area would also like to check out Paestum and Salerno- private tours seems expensive, but could be worth it-- Can all this be done by public transport-what can be done in a day and what should we save for another day?
Any advice/tips would be helpful. Thank you
This past May we spent some time in Sorrento. We took the Paestum/Salerno tour offered by Golden Tours and were very pleased with it. 40 euros/pp. Everything else I could find was in the 2-300 euro range. The only issue I can see is what sort of schedule they run in the winter. I know you can do it yourself on public transport, but it's a bit complicated. Be sure to check carefully about holiday hours for everything you want to see, and keep in mind that Jan. 6 is also an important holiday in Italy.
Buon viaggio!
Paul, Have you booked your flight yet?
If not,you could fly right into Naples and take the Curreri Viaggi bus directly to Sorrento. They normally have a bus directly from Rome, but it's not available for that time of year.
On tours for the coast we used Raphael Monetti from Ricks Steves book. He picked us up in Sorrento and stopped at all the major towns on the Amalfi Coast ending with a visit to the Greek ruins in Paestum . A total of 10 hours. Mr Monetti was a wonderful man, we very much enjoyed him. That day ended up being our familys favorite day in Italy. So yes, well worth the cost!!
Gerri-I did book my flight as I am using miles.and it was so hard to find flights into Napoli with good connections and seats....was trying to look into flights from FCO to NAP but not much to choose from..... Rosalyn-Thank you I will check out Golden Tours for that tour- Since we will be there durning the holiday I hope they are running- Will be in Rome on the 6th to enjoy the holiday Julie- Thank you-I sent you a msg to ask more questions
Are Buses and Trains doable to get to Paestum and Salerno-
to tour the ruins on your own pvt tours seem so expensive How convienient is it?
It is an awkward journey from Sorrento to Paestum. Years ago when we used a rental car it was ok but more recently we have resorted to using a guided bus tour for the convenience. Unfortunately they do not run in the winter months. By public transport you could use the local Circumvesuviana train to the "Pompeii Scavi" stop and walk the 2kms or so to the Trenitalia "Pompei" station and catch a train to Salerno. Or, stay on the train to Naples go upstairs to the mainline sation and do the same. At Salerno you can catch either a bus or train to Paestum. Unable to advise on which is better as have no experience. One other option is to rent a car for the day in Sorrento and drive yourself. Weather permitting, the drive should be quieter than other times of the year.. You could go one way along the Amalfi Coast road and return by the more convenient inland route or vice versa. Example of costs not a rec as we have not hired from these people. http://www.penisolarent.com/car.htm
You can take the regionale train from Salerno to Paestum, but be sure to have tickets into and out of Paestum, since this is now a train stop and not a staffed station (there is a tourist information desk but I think they may only be there during the summer, and they do not sell train tickets). The museum is worth a visit (across from the ruins), but it is closed on Monday. You can see the ruins on Monday, however. There are audio guides available. If you are staying overnight in Paestum, your hotel will pick you up at the station (and drop you off).
Linda and Zoe thanks for that info-
