Itinerary route: Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre

I have been planning a 3 week trip to Italy for spring of 2013 using the 2008 version of the book. Now I have a copy of the 2012 version, and I notice that instead of recommending a Venice-Florence-Cinque Terre itinerary, the newer book recommends Venice-Cinque Terre-Florence. We are starting in Venice for sure, because our flights are booked, and after these first three locations we are headed to Siena and Assisi. Which of the two routes is preferable? I'm thinking there must be a good reason for the change between the two publications, but I don't know what that would be. I should add that we are travelling by train until we arrive in Siena, where we will rent a car for the hill town portion. Thanks!

Chris check out train schedules this could be the reason and this probably fits better into your schedule too as you will not have to double back.

The only reason I can think of to do Venice - Cinque Terre - Florence rather than Venice-Florence-Cinque Terre is if you were flying home from Florence. Otherwise, it doesn't seem to make much sense in terms of train travel. On the other hand, having a little-town break between big cities can be nice. But still, I wouldn't do it by train - if you're renting a car that might be a different situation.

Chris, when traveling from Venice to the CT, you most likely will change trains in Florence. It's the fastest way to get between the two locations. Thus, if Florence is your third location, you will double-back 2.5hrs-3.0hrs. The question on how to travel between these three areas is a frequent question on this site. Actually, it doesn't really matter. Just choose what you would like to see first after Venice and what you would like to see second. Just avoid Florence on a Monday as most tourist sites are closed.
