Itinerary ? - Rome,Venice, Florence, Nice or flip Florence, Venice?

Which order makes more sense. First time in Italy. - Rome 2nts (definite start point), Venice 2nts, Florence 2nts, Nice (definite end point), OR flip Florence & Venice? This is all by train, & once in Nice we rent a car and drive to Montpellier (10 days).
Whirlwind thru Italy I know, but we can relax in France.

It would make more sense to do Rome/Florence/Venice then on to Nice. You go through Florence to get to Venice, then you would have a main rail line from Venice to Nice via Milan and Genoa.

To do this, I assume I would use a night train? These tickets are NOT(?) part of any eurorail package, hence I would buy these tickets separately? It appears to be about an 8hr trip, but I can't seem to find the route it takes. Obviously it must go out of the way.
