Itinerary review

We are travelling to Italy in May. We will be coming from Lauterbrunnen in Switzerland by train to Florence/Tuscany Region.
Sat May 18th 4days arrive by train in Florence looking for BandB in Florence or smaller town possible Siena willing to rent a car.
Wed May 23 3 days take train from Florence to Amalfi coast.
Looking to either stay in Sorrento or Positano looking for reasonable BanB with beautiful views
hoping to visit Capri for a day (blue grotto)
Sat/train back to Rome for flight Sunday to US.

Is this to adventurous?

Your question is a little confusing. Wednesday is May 22, Thursday is May 23. If you are going to Amalfi on May 23 (Thurs) and leaving on Sat to go back to Rome, that is not nearly enough time to do much.

My dates were off.
We will got to Amalfi coast Wed May 22 by train and leave Sat May 25th.
It is flexible too.
We could leave Tuscany Tues May 21 and stay until Sat.

I recommend the small hotel in Florence on the Arno. It is the Hotel Balesteri.

I would not rent a car. Stay in Florence and take day trip to places like Siena.

Sorrento is a great location to use as a base. You can take the ferry to Capri or go into Naples. You can find tours to the Amalfi Coast.
