Itinerary questions

My husband and I will be traveling by train through Italy for 16 days in October. Our plan is arrival in Rome (5 nights), Florence (3 nights), Lucca and Cinque Terre (??? below) Bologna (2 nights), Merano (2 nights), and departure from Milan (2 nights). I have been reading many previous forum postings which have really been helpful in the planning so far. These questions remain:

Thinking of taking a cooking class - thoughts on Lucca or Bologna?

Should we stay in Lucca and take a day trip to Cinque Terre?
Is Genoa worth visiting, perhaps in lieu of Bologna?
We want to see the Italian Alps, hence Merano. Any feedback?

Thanks

It seems you have 15 nights? Rome, Florence, Bologna, and Meran are about enough. I would not add in Lucca or the Cinque Terre. It is a shame to go all the way to Meran for only 2 nights/1 full day, so add a night there and maybe one to Bologna, staying only the last night before your flight in Milano.

If you go to the mountains, i.e., Meran, and the ONE DAY you have allocated is rainy or overcast, you will be very disappointed, and in October, overcast is a very real possibility.

Rome - 5 nights

Florence - 3

Bologna - 3

Meran - 3

Milano - 1

That is 15 nights and plenty fast-paced.
